Alejandra Mercado happened to be the first person to join WCTG aside from the group manager. She was hired as a summer intern and was with WCTG from May to August 1998 to do a project on still image transmission over the Internet based on the SPIHT image compression algorithm. She is a Ph.D. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Maryland in College Park.
