Dr.
Xiao Tang, supervisory physicist, leads the Quantum Networks project
in the Advanced Network Technologies Division (ANTD) in the Information
Technology Laboratory (ITL) at the National Institute of Standards and
Technology (NIST). He joined NIST's ITL in June 1998.
Currently, Xiao Tang concentrates on the research and development of
quantum information and quantum key distribution networks. Prior to
that, he was a group leader managing the research activities in the
Information Storage and Integrated Systems (ISIS) group and became leader
of the NIST quantum communication testbed hardware group in 2001. For
his excellent research work he received NIST's Jacob Rabinow Applied
Research Award in 2003; the Bronze Medal Award issued by US Department
of Commerce in 2005.
Before joining NIST, Xiao Tang was a research associate professor in
the Materials Science Research Center at Howard University, Washington
DC. In the latter 1980's, he was a deputy director of Pohl Institute
of Solid State Physics and an associate professor in the Department
of Physics at Tongji University, Shanghai. In the early 1970's, he and
his colleagues developed the first Chinese semiconductor laser, which was
contineously operated at room temperature, in the
Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences in Beijing. He has
published over 70 scientific research papers and many conference proceedings.
